Ready For The Mistletoe

It's the most wonderful time of the year
There'll be much mistletoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When love ones are near
It's the most wonderful time of the year!

This is our favorite time of the year! Everywhere we go carols are playing, wonderful smells are wafting in the air, people are cheerful, and Christmas lights are twinkling. There are parties and great food and joyful times of reconnecting with friends and family.

Since we’re going to be out and about a lot, hustling, and bustling and traveling, we need to remember to make sure we take extra care of our skin so we can look radiant under the mistletoe!

Even though the holidays are wonderful times, we cannot forget that they can be stressful too, so we at Tree of Life Beauty have put together a few tips to help you truly relax and enjoy your holiday season.

1. One big sign of the holiday hustle and bustle is that you start missing out on your much-deserved beauty sleep!

Lack of sleep can cause undereye swelling and help you to feel like a puffy mess in the morning.

Solution:
Try to get as much sleep as you can; 7 – 8 hours a night is optimal (I know, it’s so hard sometimes!). If you consistently get less sleep than you need you will probably find yourself feeling less than your best, and everyone wants to look and feel their best with family around, right?!

There’s a reason sleep is called “beauty rest,” and everyone knows that when you don’t get enough sleep, your skin pays the price. For an “under eye bags quick fix,” you can try chilling a spoon and using the round side to massage with upwards strokes under each eye gently (NEVER in your eye, obviously). 2. Another sign of good-old Holiday stress is that you forget to drink enough water.


When you're rushed and distracted with all the holiday planning, chances are you're also forgetting to drink enough water. This time of year can be dehydrating anyway, but it doesn’t help that you’re probably also drinking more coffee, soda, or even alcohol than usual (everyone loves a bit of eggnog!). If your body doesn’t stay hydrated, your skin can turn dry and flaky, which is a definite mistletoe turn-off.

Solution:

3. Let’s talk about… the IN-LAWS!

Everyone would like to say they love their in-laws without hesitation, but when family and opinion get together, there is always the potential for some good-old family tension. If you are experiencing things like acne flare-ups or even rashes, it could actually be stress in disguise (no, we are not doctors, but this is a real thing!).

Don’t get us wrong; we are not blaming Aunt Marjorie’s Bulldogs for our breakouts (if you get that reference, we hope it made you smile), but stress actually does release cortisol and adrenaline, which can cause skin issues like acne, rashes, or hives.

Solution:
Don’t forget to take some “you” time during the holidays, especially when the beloved in-laws all get together and try to catch up on the last year’s craziness. For many, this year has been both wonderful and trying, and it is not always easy to see eye-to-eye.

Finally, even though you may be pressed for time and tempted to skip washing your face, wash it anyway and NEVER go to sleep with your makeup on. Dirty, makeup-clogged skin is a recipe for a breakout, no question about it. 4. Breathe (no really, we’re serious).

Studies have shown that when a lot is happening at once, people can tend to breathe in short, shallow breaths, and can even find themselves holding their breath for periods of time without realizing it. Who knew?!

Solution: Think about your favorite Holiday character by breathing deeply and letting out a nice, big, jolly… yawn every once in a while (what, did you think we were going to say “laugh?”). Oxygen is amazing, and besides helping your body feel more energetic, it can help stimulate your mind and allow you to truly enjoy the holiday season that much more.

Take the time to breathe… while you take in the wonder and joy of family and the holidays!

5. Smile, because after all, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

I don’t know about you, but when I’m trying to measure out JUST the right amount of an ingredient for that big holiday dinner I tend to furrow my brow, purse my lips, or squint (among other facial expressions that can lead to deeper wrinkles).

Solution:
RELAX as best you can, and as often as you can remember smile or make silly faces to release the tension in your face. Raise your eyebrows, scrunch up your eyes, open your mouth wide, imitate Jim Carrey to relax those facial muscles! People watching you may think you’re crazy, but hey… what better way to really have some fun with the kids than making faces at each other?
